I hate using tampons and pads are so uncomfortable! ladies, help?
Few days ago, I had my period and it's REALLY heavy. Every time I put on a tampon 2-3 hours later it would start to leak (Extra absorbent) I am really not comfortable using pads because I can feel the blood coming out and during school days I would ALWAYS ask to go to the washroom and change my tampon every 2-3 hours. What else is a good idea? I am 14 years old and I don't really recommend me going to a doctor or using a menstrual cup. Thank you soo much for the answers.
Your period really isn't that heavy, seriously, this is fairly normal for a heavy day during women's periods - remember tampons are only supposed to be worn for 4-6 hours, so you're just having to change an hour or so before then. I'm an example of someone with heavy flow - when I used tampons and pads I would leak through an extra absorbent tampon, night time pad, and all my clothing within 15 minutes - my periods are considered heavy, you're are average, they just seem heavy to you.
Most women who are not comfortable using pads are not comfortable as they're wearing commercial brands like Always - these are made form plastics and other synthetics so don't allow air to get to your genitals, making them feel moist and warm, so uncomfortable. Try different types of pads such as cloth pads like Lunapads http://www.lunapads.com which are far more comfortable, you can also add extra liners to cloth pads to deal better with heavy flow.
You can also get period panties which are underwear with pads built in, you can add extra liners to these too, so if you wore period panties and pads like these then you would have four times more protection than pads alone.
Why don't you use menstrual cups?
Menstrual cups are a better option for someone of your age than tampons because cups are far safer and you don't have all the precautions you have to follow as with tampons - someone your age is at higher risk from infections and TSS while using tampons. At your age it'd be easier to use a cup as you can wear them all day without needing to change so more convenient when in school. Cups can also be worn overnight, which you can't do with tampons, and you don't have to alternate with pads as you have to with tampons, cups also don't leak - they really are the best option for heavy flow.
There are cups specifically for young women, such as Ladycup's http://www.ladycup.com which are very small, but I've known girls younger than you use larger brands of menstrual cups without problem as cups aren't much bigger than tampons and they are easier to use.
You don't need to see a doctor, but if you ever do be careful they don't try to give you the pill as this does NOT deal with heavy flow, as flow isn't that heavy you'd not need tests as it's unlikely there is anything wrong, but you may want to get tranexamic acid which will half your flow.
At home you can help by keeping healthy, make sure you're getting iron to make up for blood loss, magnesium, zinc and calcium for menstrual health, vitamin E to regulate flow, and vitamins A and C to regulate estrogen levels to lessen flow. Drink coffee as this constricts blood vessels in the uterus preventing heavy blood loss. Look into other herbal treatments too, like chaste tree, vitex or raspberry leaf, also taking evening primrose oil or black cohosh capsules daily will help.
