my chinchilla died 5 days after giving birth to 2 kits.1 died w/her what could have happend. 1 kit is alive.?
what can i do for the chinchilla that is still alive. as of now it is in with the father and grandmother. It seems as though the grandmother is nursing it not sure its getting anyting though. this is day two of it alive without the natural mother. i have purchased KMR and manage to get a drop or two into the kit but it realy shows no intrest. The grandmother had the kits mother a year ago. she is most likely pregnat at this time as well. is it possible she has milk for the kit? the kit has been picking through the food, i have moistend some up and it seems to be nibbling. it is running all over the cage and is quite active. please any ifo you coudl give me would be great.. any ideas on what casues the mom to die and one kit the same day???
Don't listen to Law L. Anyways, the mother may have been ill and couldn't live through the pain and stress through giving birth. And the two kits that died were probably ill like their mother (could have been genes from their mother since she was ill at the time) too. The other female ('grandmother') is probably trying to nurse the kit, but doesn't have any/enough milk or calcium to feed the kit. It should be active, which is a good thing, but you should go to your local exotic pet store and see if the have any Chinchilla formula for the kit. If it doesn't you should visit the vet, the kit may die. Don't feel bad. It's normal for medium and small animals to die because they don't have enough stamina in their body to support it. You couldn't stop it. Try to keep the remaining kit alive.
