Different Types of Walking Canes
Walking canes and sticks come in many forms and can offer more than stability. You can find aluminum, collapsible or folding, carved wood, as well as lighted, quad, and seat canes.
A folding or collapsible cane is lightweight and easily tucks away when not in use. Just fold the cane up when sitting in a crowded or closely confined area such as a restaurant. It is also handy for those to use to get to their wheelchair. Once in the chair, fold the cane up and it is not in the way.
Folding seat canes, besides offering stability, make a perfect resting seat as well as a sport seat. Take it with you to the kids' baseball and soccer games where seating is limited or climbing stairs is out of the question. A cane with a seat works beautifully for those with asthma, arthritis and fibromyalgia or for those who have had a back injury, hip or leg surgery, or have achy feet or knees.
Besides stability, the bottom half of a lighted walking cane illuminates your pathway. It is perfect when you fall a sleep watching TV at night. Just use the cane to light your way to bed! The light also works well at twilight when evening light is fading or during any low light situation.
Aluminum canes are lightweight and usually adjustable. You can choose a handle style such as curved, derby or offset. Quad walking canes can be adjustable and have a broadened bottom base for extra stability. Steel canes offer more support and some have a weight capacity of 500 lbs.
Many carved, wooden walking canes and walking sticks are elegant and exotic. They are usually handmade in distinctive woods, some with twists that show off the wood's grain. Ladies canes are generally lighter and more slender than regular ones.
The various types of walking canes and sticks can make choosing difficult. Besides stability, do you want one to light your way, to sit on, or just something that has beautiful wood grains? Luckily, you don't have to choose. Use a seat cane when going to a sports event, a lighted cane in the evenings, and your gorgeous wooden cane on special occasions!
