Mercury is far better. People often get inaccurate, higher readings from digital meters. This CAN be fixed by adjustment, but mercury is still more accurate. If you're having problems getting an accurate blood pressure, check the size of the cuff that's being used. It may be too small/large for the person whose blood pressure you're taking. The problem with mercury manometers is that the air vent at the top of the column can become clogged, or the mercury may oxidize. You can't spot these problems with just your eyes. One sign of an issue is the mercury moving more slowly than usual.
So, really.. both have problems, but I have heard in general that mercury is more accurate. To avoid problems with a digital manometer, make sure that your needle is on zero at baseline. If it's not, you'll need to recalibrate it using a mercury manometer with a Y connector attached to the tubing on both manometers. While it's connected, compare pressures at several points along the scale. You also need to make sure you have a quality stethoscope that lets you hear low-frequency sounds. Inaccurate technique can obviously hinder readings as well.
Pressure around you and inside the body can vary. It mostly depends on your height above/below sealevel. Pressure inside your body can change based on several factors as well.
