Making a vacuum pump from an old refrigerator?
I have heard, from several sources, that it's possible to make a vacuum pump using the compressor from an old fridge. Has anyone actually done it? What else will I need? How deep a vacuum can I expect to get from it? Is there anything dangerous that I have to be aware of, beside the obvious mains electricity?
I've got some ideas for experiments to do with this thing, obviously, but suggestions will be welcome.
My friend and I used an old compressor from some kind of grocery store or restaurant cooler. It was quite a bit larger than an ordinary refrigerator compressor. An appliance dealer gave it to us. We evacuated a gallon jug and then, by means of valves, connected the evacuated jug to the exhaust side of the compressor and connected another jug to the suction. Then we connected that jug to the exhaust. I don't remember the exact number of jugs or the exact valving sequence but we ultimately achieved quite a good vacuum in our bell jar. We did this in about 1960. It seems to me that our mercury barometer showed a sufficiently good vacuum that we couldn't measure it. We tried a water barometer, but the water boiled.
We were quite concerned about imploding our jugs and built a wooden box to keep them in to protect ourselves. We assumed that the bell jar was designed to withstand a vacuum and didn't worry about it. We didn't have any problems.
