Digital Zoom Vs. Optical Zoom - What Is The Difference?
The majority of digital camera models available today offer both optical zoom and digital zoom functions. Many novice photographers usually are not completely sure just how both of these distinct zoom methods work, and ways in which they can be used to realize distinctive results.
Optical zoom on a camera performs in the same manner a 35mm film camera's zoom lens works. In short, it changes the length of your digital camera lens drawing your current photographic subject nearer to you. While doing this, the quality of the photo is retained without being sacrificed in any way.
Digital zoom works in a distinct manner by simply taking a photo, cropping it to your selected area, then enlarging the selected portion. This leads to a reduction in the photo's quality, somewhere between a small to substantial quality loss.
So although digital zoom may well provide you with a larger view of your photographic subject, your picture will become slightly blurry and details will be lost. If at all possible, it would be a sensible idea to turn off your digital camera's digital zoom option. This will make sure you don't automatically zoom in excessively because the digital zoom will typically take over after the optical zoom has gone as far as it can go.
In cases where you're aiming to get a closer shot of a subject, but still would like to preserve the photograph's quality, there are a couple of procedures you could take to achieve just that. One slightly obvious way would be to move closer to the particular object that you are photographing. Even a foot or two might make a lot of difference. In case that isn't an option, consider adjusting your camera to take photos at the maximum file size. This will allow you to shoot the highest quality picture that you can crop later on in an image editing program like Photoshop.
Despite the fact that optical zoom produces significantly better quality photos, there is certainly still a purpose for digital zoom. If your pictures are usually delivered by email or posted on the internet, the quality does not really need to be great. Digital zoom should be fine for these functions. Then again, if you are planning on printingprinting out your photos, you need to stay with optimal zoom and turn off digital zoom.
